The acclaimed composer and guitarist Juan Manuel Cañizares, recently awarded the National Music Prize, will present his “Cañizares Flamenco Trio” at the inaugural concert of the 2023-2024 Music Season organized by the BBVA Foundation. The night promises to be an unparalleled musical encounter, merging the essence of Spanish classical music with the fervor of flamenco.
Spanish guitarist and composer, Cañizares, delivered a striking performance at the Aichi Arts Center in Nagoya on July 7th and 8th, captivating the Japanese audience on these two memorable nights. Presented for the first time in Japan was the “Mediterranean Concerto,” a concerto for guitar and orchestra composed by Cañizares. The audience’s response was outstanding on both nights, intensifying the magic of the event.
On 2 July, at 10:00 P.M., Cañizares will participate in the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada, with a guitar duet concert.
Owing to the current circumstances, no audience will attend, but the concert will be broadcast online.
Next Sunday 31 May, at 11:00 a.m. (Spanish peninsular time) we shall have the chance of listening to “Concierto Al-Andalus”dedicated to Master Paco de Lucía. You will be able to follow this broadcast life from anywhere in the world, through the station’s website.

In 2020 we celebrate the Tokyo Olympic Games in Japan, and Cañizares is working full steam ahead in the Artistic Swimming Spanish National Team.
In 2020 he will travel to Japan three times: during the Olympic Games, for his tour, and for the presentation of the album Rodrigo por Cañizares. He shall also visit other countries in Asia and Latin America.
Concierto Al-Andalus, composed by Cañizares and dedicated to his friend and mentor Paco de Lucía, has come again to Pamplona with the Navarra Symphonic Orchestra conducted by master Josep Pons.
This concert presents many flamenco features, including flamenco hand-clapping.
Cañizares gave a solo concert in Gibraltar. The event was celebrated in The Convent Ballroom, a historical building built in the 16th century.
The concert was a great success. The repertoire was a wonderful mix of flamenco music by Cañizares and pieces of Spanish music arranged for guitar by Cañizares.
As a show of solidarity with those who suffered the consequences, the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra, directed by master Maestro Chichon offered an extraordinary concert and invited several first-rate artists to participate. They offered to play for free, as did master Chichon, in order to show their sympathy with the people from the Canaries.
Cañizares took part in this event, playing Rodrigo’s Fantasía para un Gentilhombre as a soloist.
Cañizares took part in the 10th edition of Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilla. He opened the festival with Concierto de Aranjuez alongside Orquesta OST directed by Master Manuel Alejandro González.
A few days before the concert he was invited to the program “La Tarde Aquí y Ahora” led by the popular presenter Juan y Medio, broadcast by Canal Sur TV.

In the 39th edition of the Cordoba Guitar Festival, Cañizares interpreted the Concierto de Aranjuez, the main work of Master Rodrigo, and his own Concierto Mediterráneo a la memoria de Joaquín Rodrigo. The concert took place in a magical setting: the Patio de los Naranjos, Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba, which was declared World Heritage Site 25 years ago.

The 39th Festival de la Guitarra de Córdoba, celebrated between 4 and 13 of July, paid homage to master Joaquín Rodrigo. This tribute took place on 6 July, the 20th anniversary of the master’s death. The participants in the concert were José María Gallardo del Rey, composer and classical guitarist, and Cañizares composer and flamenco guitarist, alongside the Cordoba Orchestra, conducted by master Carlos Dominguez-Nieto.
26 June 2019 was an important day for music history in Spain. That day, “Preludio al atardecer”, an unpublished work by Master Joaquín Rodrigo, was premiered in the auditorium of the National Library of Spain (Biblioteca Nacional de España).
Cañizares presents his new album, Rodrigo por Cañizares”, which is his 15th as a soloist, and the tenth in his series “por Cañizares”. This album includes an unpublished work by Master Rodrigo, “Preludio al atardecer”, which was found in the foundation of Victoria and Joaquín Rodrigo.
Montenegro is a warm and welcoming country. Cañizares has been invited to one of their guitar festivals in multiple occasions. Last May, Cañizares participated in the Montenegro Guitar Festival, in the city of Tivat. Alongside the guitarist Juan Carlos Gómez he played the concert “Solo dúo flamenco”.
Throughout the year, Alicante witnesses many guitar concerts and events. This Mediterranean city is doing outstanding work in disseminating guitar music.

Concierto de Aranjuez in Taiwan, Cañizares has collaborated with the Taipei Symphonic Orchestra, conducted by Master Josep Pons. The concert took place in one of Taiwan’s largest concert halls. As the photograph shows, the National Music Theatre is a majestic building.
Cañizares attended the competition live for the first time. For him, it is important to listen to the acoustics of the sport hall, as music will sound very differently in the recording studio. This new experience will be of great help for the work that he is undertaking for the Spanish national team.
Last month, Cañizares has had the opportunity of playing the Concierto de Aranjuez by Master Rodrigo in several theatres worldwide.

Cañizares interpreted the Concierto de Aranjuez in the Palau de la Música Catalana, only concert hall to have been declared World Heritage by UNESCO (4 December 1997).
Rodrigo composed El Concierto de Aranjuez in 1939, and premiered it in this very concert hall in the following year, when it was interpreted by guitarist Rigino Sainz de la Masa.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Cañizares has collaborated with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, conducted by Master Karel Mark Chichon. Cañizares has performed as soloist guitar in Fantasía para un Gentilhombre by Master Rodrigo, which was also included in the programme of the concerts in Finland, a couple of weeks ago.
On Wednesday March 13th, Teatro Circo Price, in Madrid, was the epicentre of Spanish music, with the MIN Awards ceremony, which was attended by candidates, family and friends.
The Spanish National Team of Artistic Swimming (formerly known as synchronised swimming) has won 5 medals (1 gold, 3 silvers and 1 bronze) in the first World Series competition, which took place in Paris last weekend.
