If there is one work that opened a whole new world for Juan Manuel Cañizares that was the ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’, which his mentor Paco de Lucíaused to play in the dressing room. This was in 1991, and since then, Cañizares has obsessed over this piece and Rodrigo…
Over time, Cañizares achieved such mastery with this piece that, twenty years later, he was invited by Simon Rattle to play it with what is considered to be the world’s best orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic. To date, Cañizares remains the only flamenco artist to have been invited to play with this orchestra.

‘…I have had the honour and privilege of playing it for the first time in history’, says the guitarist, who has premiered the work worldwide in a video for EL PAÍS. The video was recorded last week in the Teatro Real, a venue that brings luck and good memories to Cañizares, because it was there that he played the Concierto de Aranjuez with the Berlin Philharmonic.
