26 June 2019 was an important day for music history in Spain. That day, “Preludio al atardecer“, an unpublished work by Master Joaquín Rodrigo, was premiered in the auditorium of the National Library of Spain (Biblioteca Nacional de España).

Cañizares played this piece for the first time in history. After recording ig in his album “Rodrigo por Cañizares“, this concert was a truly significant event.

Before interpreting the piece, Cañizares and Mr Jesús Ruiz Mantilla, journalist and musical critic, explained the flamenco flavour of many of Rodrigo’s work, and the story of this piece, from its discovery to its recording.

Ms. Cecilia León Rodrigo, the granddaughter of Master Joaquín Rodrigo and head of Fundación Rodrigo attended the premiere.

Mr. Mizukami, the Japanese ambassador, also attended the premiere with his wife. Cañizares has contributed to the cultural relationships between Spain and Japan, attending numerous bi-cultural events, and touring Japan; his relationship with the Japanese ambassadors is always excellent.
Between May and September, the Biblioteca Nacional de España will host an exhibit that commemorates the 20th anniversary since Joaquín Rodrigo’s death. The exhibit features scores, books, photographs and personal possessions of the master..
